Lower Extremity: Advanced Massage Class

Our lower extremity advanced massage class provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the structure, function, palpation, assessment, and treatment of the soft tissues associated with the hip, knee, ankle, and foot. Students develop proficiency in advanced lower extremity massage therapy techniques, such as orthopedic, Cyriax friction, and Swedish massage training, and prepare themselves for the start of the student clinic internship onsite at our massage school in Atlanta.

GMS offers in-depth orthopedic, Cyriax friction, and Swedish massage training.

Topics covered in our lower extremity advanced massage therapy class include:

  • Pregnancy Massage: Students learn the difference between normal and high-risk pregnancies as well as how to position pregnant clients on a massage table. Discussions will also center around creating treatment modifications for pregnant clients.
  • Cyriax Friction Massage: This advanced massage class covers the Cyriax friction massage technique, developed by British orthopedic physician James Cyriax, which is used to restore painless mobility to muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
  • Neuromuscular Therapy: Neuromuscular therapy is used to treat and release trigger points, which are spots of hyperirritability in the soft tissue that often refer pain to remote locations in the body.
  • Orthopedic Massage: In this class, students learn to increase the intensity of their treatments by combining a variety of massage techniques with both active and passive movements.
  • Stretching: Instructors discuss the different types of stretching, including static, dynamic, pin & stretch, and rope stretching.
  • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation: Used to enhance stretching, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation focuses on the nervous system to encourage an increased range of motion and length in tissue. Students learn this technique through hands-on examples.
  • Introduction to Orthopedic Physical Assessment: Students are taught a systematic method of gathering information and learn to document and analyze so they can develop a customized treatment plan for a client who is experiencing pain.
  • Anatomy and Physiology: Students will be instructed on detailed information about the skeletal, articular, and muscular systems.

Listen to what the experts have to say...

"Throughout my life, I have been truly blessed to work with and learn from the very best in whatever profession I chose to pursue and I recognize the importance of having caring and passionate mentors in my life. When I started my search for a massage school, I literally traveled over 4,000 miles, personally visiting six different schools to find that special place that would give me the tools and education I would need to compete in one of the fastest-growing industries in America today. In Georgia I had the pleasure of meeting two individuals that completely changed my life.

Laurie Craig was my motivation each and every day I attended class. She brought to life the human body in a way that kept my curiosity and my desire to learn at a fever pitch for all of my intense training. Her knowledge and passion for anatomy and physiology is second to none. My performance schedule created several conflicts with my class schedule. I thank God Laurie saw something in me that was worth fighting for.

Rick Garbowski was not only the director of my program, but also my encourager. His guidance and mentorship meant more to me during my education than I can ever express. Rick is also one of the finest teachers of massage technique in the country.

I can assure you that as a student of Georgia Massage School you will receive the finest and most applicable education from the very best staff in the entire industry."
